I think at clan tier 3 you can talk to the leader of a faction and request to be his vassal (at clan tier 2 you can only request to be a merc). Donate troops to garrisons and prisoners to prisons. And, as mentioned above, feed the starving armies since Lords do crap-all to be sure they have food. The easiest thing to do is find a ton of cheap grain and buy it all. Get several hundred days worth and then join a large army. The Influence will roll in
Arena Tournaments help. Raising villages of factions at war with yours. Various ways should work. As far as the load times go, that sucks. I personally have not seen long load times.

Right now I've just been killing any bandits and running around declaring on the minor factions (Hidden hand, Ghilman, Wolfskins etc.) who are independent to get some bigger battles, but it'd still

Imperial Towns have a tournament preference that will be familiar for anyone coming from other Mount and Blade games. Sword and Board (Shield), Spear on Horseback, Archers, a good all around tournament with a notable absence of any two handed weapons, besides the odd spear. They tend to emphasize one handed weapons.
